Our Church

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." - Jesus (Matthew)

Our Church

Our church in Portland, Maine is a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. We believe that God is good, Love itself; that God loves all mankind, pouring out goodness and blessings. We see God as the source of all good, health, and comfort. God offers you and your family, as Jesus did centuries ago, the present possibility of physical and moral healing through spiritual means alone.

God loves everyone! Jesus told us: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.” (Luke) We delight in joining with people who feel the same way, sharing our love with our community and our neighbors.

Services in Portland Church

We welcome the public to all our gatherings. On Sunday mornings at 10 am, we sing hymns and listen to readings from the Bible and the Christian Science textbook (together, these books are our Pastor) on a fresh topic each week. Our services offer time for quiet reflection, inspiration, and healing.

Our annual 10 am Thanksgiving Day service also includes time for sharing of gratitude from the congregation.

On Wednesdays at 7:30 pm, we meet to sing, hear brief readings, and share gratitude. We provide child care at all services and invite you to attend in person or via Zoom.

Our Readers share their thoughts about their contributions to our services:

First Reader: “I serve to witness and cherish the unstoppable unfolding of Mind’s (God’s) selfless ideas in the Portland, national and worldwide communities, right where there may appear to be selfishness, disfunction and division.”

Second Reader: “One of the things that stands out to me about our church is the fact that Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, ordained two books as the forever pastor for all Christian Science churches. This Christian Science Pastor consists of the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. As a lifelong student of Christian Science, I have made it my practice to earnestly turn to my Pastor for answers, comfort, and healing whenever I have questions about God and His creation, or if I’m seeking help for any kind of problem. I have experienced many healings throughout my life by relying solely on Christian Science, and I have witnessed many healings in my family over the years.

“It is currently my privilege to serve as Second Reader in our church, and I strive to approach the weekly Lesson-Sermon with humility, love, and a willingness to grow in my understanding of that week’s subject. I enjoy doing deeper research into a Bible citation or story to be sure I grasp the full meaning so that I can read with understanding on Sunday. I so often feel a beautiful sense of God’s presence during our church services, which bring together hearts yearning to bless and to be blessed. These wordless prayers are answered at our services! Hearts uniting in prayer and love — that’s what I see and feel during the time I spend together with fellow members and guests. What a refuge for anyone coming through our doors, which are open to all!”
